Spa Vacations: Why So Popular?

By Ian W Anderson

Can you imagine a universe in which you are the center of attention? You laze about for the entire day without a care in the world. In fact, the only thing that you have to think about is whether or not you want to get a facial or a massage. Hmmm. Decisions, decisions.

The popularity of spa vacations has led to the emergence of luxury spas in almost every imagined spot on the planet.

browse thousands of global tours and activities

As touched upon earlier, the popularity of spa vacations has to do primarily with their versatility. Granted, everyone in this stressful hectic world in which we live needs a little bit of rest and relaxation. But we also belong to a society that likes to have things on their own terms. Spa vacations meet this end perfectly by offering a variety of locations, pampering services and time commitments. With a spa vacation it’s quite possible to take only one day off for a little rest and relaxation or jet around the world and get lost for weeks.

So, what kind of things does a spa vacation package include? Here are just a few of the perks:

In addition to attracting the weary and downtrodden, spas offer a unique opportunity to pamper loved ones. For this reason, gift certificates and gift vacations to the world’s most famous spas are extremely popular.

Spa vacations can also be therapeutic. In fact, many people with physical conditions and limitations benefit from a stay at a spa. There are also spa vacations geared toward helping people get a jump start on losing weight.

Is it any wonder that spa vacations are so popular? With all of these options and pampering activities to choose from, the only thing to wonder about is when and where.

Orthotic Therapy - What It Takes - What To Look For

By Dennis Kiper

Are your orthotics working for you? Even when an orthotic initially fits properly, it may cause an immediate negative reaction. This can be perfectly normal. The key is to feel whether that reaction gets worse, stays the same or gets better.

Changing the way one walks, usually causes a ripple reaction throughout the lower extremity. Each muscle small and large has muscle memory.

Orthotic

Changing the alignment of all the muscles of the lower extremity can effect the entire musculo-skeletal structure in standing and gait; even a small amount can cause a reaction to that muscle memory on a day-to-day basis; after all, each muscle goes through contraction and relaxation hundreds and thousands of times a day (from the day you started walking). It knows what to expect from that movement for that task. Your alignment throughout your early development sets the stage for how your postural complex will age biomechanically.

You the patient need to take partial responsibility in determining if your orthotics are working for you. Here’s how:
You would do best to help your orthotic specialist and yourself by keeping a log daily and providing the following information:

Here’s the information I ask of my patients.

How many hours worn EACH day? What happens?
Any level of comfort? (DO NOT relate this just to your symptoms and remember you need to think about each foot)
Did one or both feet get sore (after how many hours?)
Did it hurt?
Which foot was most or least comfortable?
A couple of other things to think about are:

How many hours worn comfortably?
Any soreness, fatigue?
Any new pain?
REMEMBER: Don’t judge the orthotic by your symptoms alone. Your level of pain, may mask the fact that the orthotics are fitting. Think only of the “fit.”

Your orthotic specialist should be able to explain biomechanically what is happening, and make any adjustments if necessary. You can feel if those adjustments are working or not.

Because of the newer fluid technology orthotics (such as the Silicone Dynamic Orthotic—SDO) available it is easier to determine if L/R side is more or less comfortable than the other because they act more like “cushions” than a “traditional” orthotic. And by adding or reducing fluid you can soften or harden those cushions. To make it “fit”.

In addition L&R orthotics are interchangeable as they each match the way the foot walks, In this way you have a variety of “fits” of the orthotics for you to sample.

By doing this, the specialist and you can evaluate if the fit is on track to being best. Determining this most often takes 1-4 weeks..

THE FIT:

The arch should feel the support, up to comfortably snug.
It “must” be comfortable to wear (not in the sense of relieving your symptoms)
You “must” feel stable on your feet when you are on the ground. not unsteady or shifted over to one side.
Then it’s just a matter of being able to wear them comfortably enough to be worn all day and even around the house. It still can take awhile to be able to wear a proper fitting orthotic all day, because of muscle memory reacting to the changes in the way they remember. This is part of your healing pain to be distinguished from an improperly fit orthotic.

When you understand what you should be expecting out of your orthotics after any corrections are made and if they helped or not, you can make better decisions concerning if your orthotics are working the way they should.

Health Benefits of Saunas

By Heather D Brown

A sauna can either be a bath that uses dry heat to produce perspiration or a bath where water is poured over heated stones to produce steam. There are several possible health benefits of saunas. These include relaxation and a feeling of well being, relaxation of sore, tight, and overworked muscles, relief of daily stress and tension and of tension headaches, removal of body toxins, strengthening of the immune system, improvement of circulation, burns calories to help control weight, refreshes, deep cleans and moisturizes the skin, and may also improve a person's quality of sleep.

Go to Pool Click

The heat of the wet or dry sauna helps to relax the body and relieve stress and tension. This also helps sore, tight, and overworked muscles.

A sauna can possibly help with weight loss, not just through the loss of water through sweating. Being in a sauna also causes your heart rate to increase up to 50 percent above normal. Since this increase in heart rate is similar to what happens when you're walking or lightly exercising, it can cause your metabolism to react similarly to how it does when you are exercising.

Acne and other skin irritations can be improved by spending time in a sauna. The increased heart rate that the sauna causes increases the blood flow to the skin. The skin usually only receives about 10 percent of the total blood flow, but with the increased temperature of the skin while in a sauna, the blood flow to the skin can be increased to 40 to 50 percent of the body's total blood flow. Increased blood flow to the skin provides more oxygen and nutrients which helps to rejuvenate the skin. Perspiration also helps to flush out impurities and release dead skin cells.

Sauna usage helps to strengthen the body's immune system. When the body's temperature rises during an illness, the body will begin to produce more white blood cells and antibodies to battle the illness. The rise of body temperature due to sauna usage will also cause the body to produce more antibodies and white blood cells. This will not be to the same extent as an actual illness, but it does help to strengthen our immune system.

Anyone who has a heart or blood pressure condition should check with their doctor before using a sauna in order to make sure they don't run the risk of complications.

HydroTherapy Explained

By Timothy Croy

HydroTherapy is a type of treatment for many different medical conditions and diseases. This form of treatment has been considered effective all through history. Many civilizations throughout history have employed the use of water in treating various conditions, and soothing the symptoms of other medical conditions. Here, you will learn many details regarding HydroTherapy.

Go to Pool Click

Ancient civilizations implemented the use of HydroTherapy for numerous things. In historical Egypt is was considered common practice to bathe among a variety of flowers and herbs. Egyptians were also known to mix a combination of oils which were believed to have healing powers in their bath water. Many historical figures who practiced medicine prescribed drinking and bathing in certain types of waters to heal from injuries and sickness. There were many civilizations that simply hailed the bath as a popular social activity.

HydroTherapy in its modern form has proven to be effective in soothing the symptoms associated with inflammatory diseases. Those that experience discomfort due to a disease or a condition that affects the musculoskeletal system have also found relief by engaging in HydroTherapy. Some conditions that may be relieved by this form of water therapy include Fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, lupus, and gout. Many injuries that result in muscle and bone damage, or burns, can benefit from using HydroTherapy.

There are many different types of HydroTherapy available today. The following will briefly outline these types.

• Compresses - There are many different types of compresses that have been proven to be effective to numerous individuals while experiencing a particular sickness or injury. It is common to use water which is covered in a material that allows the water to be frozen, or cooled, and also allows it to be warm, or boiling. It is often common for these to be used in conditions that result in inflammation. However, compresses have been used in order to reduce fever in many individuals as well.

• Saunas - Saunas have been a popular form of HydroTherapy all through history. These are believed to assist in improving circulation throughout the body. In addition to this, saunas also help with losing weight and other medical issues.

• HydroTherapy Packings - Throughout history, and even today, it is not uncommon for an individual in shock, or with a high body temperature to be wrapped in a sheet to assist them. Many times, the wet sheet is also covered in an assortment of blankets to keep the moisture in.

• HydroTherapy Exercise - Many doctors prescribe physical therapy that consists of performing various types of exercises in the water. This will help these individuals gain mobility and strength in different areas of the body.

• Basic water therapy - Many individuals who suffer burns and related injuries benefit from engaging in a type of bath. This helps to rejuvenate the skin and generate healing.

Hydrotherapy has proven to be effective time and time again throughout history. Many find this form of therapy effective when it comes to relaxation, recovering from injuries, soothing the symptoms associated with many medical conditions and diseases, and even as an aid to gain strength in the body.

There are many situations in which HydroTherapy should be used with caution. Those who experience the condition of Reynaud's disease should avoid HydroTherapy that involves the application of extremely cold water. Those that are very young, or elderly, should be cautious with certain types of water therapy. There are also many other people who should be careful with water therapy. If you have a concern, it is important to discuss this form of treatment with your doctor.

How Does an Infrared Sauna Work - Do You Know How an Infrared Sauna Works?

By Timothy Croy

Whether you have been told to try an infrared sauna for various health reasons or you're just looking for a new way help your body feel refreshed and rejuvenated, one thing that you need to look into is an infrared sauna. An infrared sauna can go a long way towards raising your general level of health, but one thing you may be wondering is how does it work?

Go to Pool Click

The light that is produced by an infrared sauna warms you up without warming the air between you and the heat emitters. Infrared saunas do not use UV light; instead it radiates infrared light along with a small spectrum of red, orange and yellow light found on that end of the spectrum. The results of sitting for a while in this environment can be extremely healthy for you.

An infrared sauna works on the same the principles that a normal sauna does. When your body sweats, you are flushing impurities out of your system. As the tissues of your body absorb the rays produced by the source of heat, it will start to expel the toxins from your body. With an infrared sauna, your body will be affected at a cellular level, where the toxins from your cells will be pushed into your blood stream and then released from your body. Infrared light from a sauna like this will also penetrate your body better than the heat from a steam sauna will' far infrared light is said to penetrate your body deeper than steam heat, and also to duplicate the healthy frequencies of your body's cells. This makes this sort of heat something that your body can easily process, and why not? 80% of the light that makes it to Earth is infrared!

An infrared sauna has several advantages over a regular steam sauna. One thing to keep in mind is that an infrared sauna tends to be cooler. Because of the way the infrared light is absorbed into your body, it does not need to get as hot for you to start ejecting the toxins through your blood stream. This is ideal for people who don't have a very high tolerance for heat. Similarly, because the infrared light is absorbed deeply into our systems, your muscles are gently warmed as are your internal organs. The results can be quite exceptional; people have said that chronic problems concerning their liver or their heart have been greatly improved with the use of an infrared sauna. Infrared saunas, due to their ability to get toxins out of your system, are also well known for their ability to prevent chronic infections and illness.

If you are considering trying an infrared sauna, don't delay; it can change the whole way you manage your health!

http://www.infrared-sauna-spot.info/ is a website devoted to giving you the very best information regarding infrared saunas on the net! Whether you want to know how an infrared sauna works, or you're simply looking for the benefits of infrared sauna, we've got you covered!

To Sauna Or Not To Sauna - That Is The Question

By Steven P. Ross

Do you want to sauna, or not? Will it really give you any benefits or not? Is it expensive or not? All very good questions. Bottom line is this - do you want to feel better and provide your body with a healthy and beneficial experience? If you answered yes to that last question, then whip out the books and plans on saunas and start doing some research.

Go to Pool Click

You can't really get a good idea of what a sauna is or what it can do for you, without knowing some of the history, and some of the benefits you could derive from using one. You also need to have some kind of idea of the types of saunas on the market, and how you can either build one yourself (you handy devil you) or assemble one yourself (with some friends and a few beers).

Finnish immigrants began homesteading in the USA, building saunas first, and their houses next. They obviously had their priorities straight. A sauna bath was "the" place to get warm, get relaxed, to socialize as a family, and to above all else, open the body's pores as a result of the high heat and sweat out the "bad" stuff in your body. Sauna baths were also used to care for the sick. Over the years of course, saunas evolved from saunas that were fueled by wood to electric saunas, infrared saunas and all manner of combinations in between. From the bare basics - heat, humidity, benches, heater, a water bucket and ladle to contemporary high tech saunas with etched glass doors, sound systems and a variety of other "must have" sauna accessories.

What are the health benefits of sauna baths? Sweating does three things for us - gets rid of body wastes, regulates our body temperature and keeps our skin clean and pliable. During a 15-minute sauna, approximately one liter of sweat is lost from your body. Sweat is known to eliminate wastes from your body. This is definitely one of the major health benefits of sauna baths. Sweating can excrete heavy metals that would take the kidneys 24 hours to eliminate. Over 90 percent of what reaches the skin's surface is water, but the remainder is wastes your body does not need. A higher internal body temperature also affects your endocrine glands, which regulate metabolism, thyroid, adrenal, ovaries and testes. Your oxygen needs will increase making your lungs more efficient.

You can either design your own sauna or opt for pre-builts. For designing your own, choose a plan to follow and adjust, pick your wood, figure out the size of the room you want, where you want to put it, use the proper insulation, venting, lighting and heater. If you're handy, this will be a snap for you to accomplish. If not, don't despair, you can always buy a kit and take it from there.

For an indoor sauna you can try a pre-built kit in which you get everything you need - ceilings, walls, panels, etc. and they are finished on both sides and insulated inside. Along with the kits comes a "put together by the numbers" set of instructions for sauna installation. It's not like there is any actual construction involved.

An outdoor sauna kit is relatively easy as well. Do you want a pre-cut sauna kit, or a pre-built modular sauna. Pre-cut packages have items in them like tongue-and-groove cedar boards for walls and the ceiling, and pre-cut benches. They also include the heater, door and accessories. If you happen to be doing the building outdoors, then you will need to draw up some plans and build an insulated frame on a poured concrete pad. There is lots of help available from experts in the industry, and online.

If you don't have experience building, then the pre-built modular sauna kits will work for you. Just have a contractor pour your concrete slab to the dimensions specified in the kit. Lay out the floor frame and start by sliding the pre-built wall panels onto the floor frame. It's pretty straightforward as most manufacturers go out of their way to make easy lock in place panels. In addition, you'd have pre-assembled benches and pre-hung doors. The only other thing you would need is an electrician to finish up with the wiring. You would pay more for this kind of a sauna kit.

Choices, choices, choices - aren't they grand? You can go so many routes to have the sauna of your dreams, that there is absolutely no excuse not to get one right? See you at the sauna building bee!

Spa Tips For Your Office

By Marilee Tolen

Clearing your office space and getting it organized is a good thing to do every once and a while. As you create your space and plan your schedule, you can incorporate tools and leave time for mini-spa experiences within your workdays. You can do many easy things in your office environment to give you powerful rejuvenating opportunities.

Kate Somerville

Here are some tips for either your home office or your corporate office:

--You can create a 5-minute "mini-steam" right at your desk. This can open your sinuses, your pores, and your mind and give you a much-needed highly rejuvenating break in your workday. Pour hot water in a cup. Put 2 - 3 drops of an essential oil such as eucalyptus, lavender, or peppermint in the cup. Put your face over the cup and take a large file folder capping over your head to create an enclosed environment. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Write on the outside of the file folder in black marker "Taking a 5 minute spa break - Do Not Disturb!"

--Give yourself a 2-minute acupressure session with points on your face. Some people call this a non-surgical face-lift. This uses the Asian principles of opening up the channels of energy or "chi". It can give you an instant uplift, alleviate a headache, clear mental fog, and bring a glow to your face. Using both hands with the pads of your first 2 fingers press firmly all over both sides of the face.

--Take a 4-minute fantasy vacation. Close your eyes, put your feet up on your desk, take a deep breath and picture your favorite vacation spot. See yourself there feeling good and having a great time. The unconscious mind doesn't know the difference between a real or imagined event. Your body will thank you!

--Rap over a wrap. Have a spa cuisine lunch with a good friend. Sandwich wraps filled with veggies and protein are a good healthy lunch. Combine that with a "heart to heart" conversation for great stress reduction.

--Give yourself self-administered foot reflexology sessions right at your desk. Keep a foot roller at your feet to roll your feet on (shoes off) during the day. This can stimulate reflex points on your feet that can relax and invigorate your entire body. Along with foot rollers you can also use a golf ball, racquetball, or tennis ball. Don't forget to keep a pair of comfy slippers under your desk for times you just need to relax your feet.

--Share a healing touch with an office mate. Exchange a nice shoulder rub with each other to relax those "computer tight" shoulder and neck muscles

--Walk outside. Take a 10-minute nature break - and that doesn't mean the rest room! A stroll outside in nature can do wonders for you.

--Freshen your environment. Diffuse essential oils in your office or cubical area so that it smells good, cuts down on unwanted bacteria, viruses, fungus and mold, and delivers more oxygen to your work space.

--Have a voluptuous jade plant on your desk near your computer. Not only does the shiny green color relax you, but the jade plant helps to absorb electromagnetic frequencies that come off of your computer screen.. In fact, many common houseplants detoxify the environment. Keep several types of plants nearby in your workspace. Peace lilies, spider plants, and English Ivy are all good plants to use.

--Fish are fun and relaxing to look at. A pretty and low maintenance fish to have on your desk is the Betta fish. It doesn't need a filtered aquarium to live in and lives on just a few pellets of food a day.

--Keep healthy snacks in your desk drawer to keep your blood sugar levels stable, especially during stressful days and days you skip meals. Mixed nuts, trail mix or healthy protein bars are good to have on hand. Ningxia Red juice packets for on the go are a great healthy energy boost.

--Music soothes the soul - and our souls often need soothing especially when we are stressed at work with issues and deadlines. Have your iPod or MP3 player with some of your favorite relaxing tunes on it playing lightly in the background.

--Google your concerns. If your mind is distracted from work because of certain life issues like relationship problems, health challenges, or family concerns, then google a phrase that best describes your concern and read about it - such as "single again at 50", "empty nest syndrome", "midlife crises", etc.

The Power of Antioxidants

By Jerry Ryan

Our bodies are designed to take care of themselves. There are systems within it for providing nutrients and for excreting the toxins. Antioxidants play a major role in removing these toxins from our body. Since they are so important in ridding us of harmful waste, it is vital that we have some knowledge of what antioxidants are, how they work and what kinds of foods and dietary supplements can provide us with their health benefits.

Home Remedies For Better Health

Antioxidants are a group of enzymes, vitamins and minerals that work to protect our bodies from forming free radicals. Free radicals in the body are atoms or groups of atoms that cause cell damage which impairs the immune system. Free radicals may be formed in a number of different ways. They can be caused by any number of bodily functions even the process of breaking down fat cells into usable energy.

To better explain this, our bodies are similar to a car. Each needs the proper fuel to perform to its peak. But just like the engines in our cars, our bodies don’t burn the fuel efficiently. This poor conversion results in exhaust fumes in our car and free radicals in our body.

Most commonly, the free radicals are missing an electron due to some metabolic process. The negative atom attempts to correct itself by pulling an electron from another cell. The damage begins at that point and a chain of cells pulling electrons from one another starts to form. As a result, this can lead to infections and degenerative diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. In addition, recent studies have shown that damage caused by free radicals may be a major factor in the aging process.

Other causes are cigarette smoke (even second-hand), overexposure to the sun, exposure to radiation as well as inhaling or ingesting any of the pollutants common in our air, water and food chain.

Luckily, our bodies have a built-in weapon against this enemy. Free radical scavengers, such as enzymes, are naturally produced in the body. They seek out and bond with the free radicals. This bonding neutralizes the destructive action that occurs in the cells.

However, with the increased levels of toxins that we are subjected to daily, the antioxidants that the body supplies may fall short of the demand. Therefore, we might consider changing our diet to increase certain foods and taking nutritional supplements that will provide additional antioxidants for the body to use.

Home Remedies For Better Health

As you have probably read in many popular magazines, vitamins A, C and E have been found to act as very good antioxidants. Foods that offer high levels of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables, particularly the yellow-green vegetables. Other herbs and supplements that serve as antioxidants are: Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Bilberry, Chokeberry, Elderberry, Coenzyme Q10, Cysteine, Glyconutrients, Ginkgo Biloba, Glutathione, Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea, Pine Bark Extract, Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins, Pycnogenol, Melatonin, Selenium, Magnesium, Superoxide Dismutase, Beta-Carotene and Zinc.

Lower Blood Pressure Through Relaxation?

By David O'Hara

Does relaxation (i.e. stress relief) really lower blood pressure?

This is not a simple yes or no question. The short, quick answer is yes. Take your blood pressure immediately after arriving home from work. Scary, isn’t it? As if the workday wasn't stressful enough, many of us tend to brood about it on the way home. And commuter traffic doesn’t help much either!

Now relax for 15 minutes and take your blood pressure again. If you’ve genuinely relaxed, your blood pressure is almost guaranteed to be lower, often substantially. (If either figure of your relaxed reading is still above 140/90 you may be hypertensive, although further monitoring is needed.)

browse thousands of global tours and activities

The long view…

So relaxation certainly does have the ability to relieve high blood pressure. The longer answer, however, is more complicated. That’s because blood pressure reduction from relaxation alone tends to be short-lived. Depending on many factors, your baseline blood pressure may return within minutes or hours of resuming normal activities. And if that baseline is high you have only gained a temporary reprieve from the dangers of hypertension.

So it might appear that relaxation has a valid, if limited, role in treating high blood pressure. But a new method called slow breathing with music may go a long way towards shifting this balance. So-called relaxation tapes have been around for a long time but these offer only a passive experience. You chill-out to a blissful track, your blood pressure drops and – like the proverbial Chinese food – you’re stressed out and hypertensive again three hours later!

Proactive relaxation?

Slow breathing with music, by contrast, combines relaxing music with a clinically proven natural treatment to lower blood pressure, slow breathing. This is not just a passive listening experience. The soundtrack integrates a pleasant-sounding guided breathing track with gentle, soothing music. Listeners simply synchronize their breathing with the track and relax to the music.

Extensive research has revealed that breathing at a rate below 10 breaths per minute and in a specific pattern for 10 to 15 minutes a day lowers blood pressure. What’s even more surprising is that the effects are cumulative and begin to last around the clock after just a few weeks of slow breathing – a result that relaxation does not generally achieve on its own.

It's a matter of balance

These superior results are because slow breathing does not rely on relaxation alone. Some of its benefit is no doubt due to its relaxing effect on major blood vessels in the chest, relieving the load on the heart. But slow breathing may also affect the body’s sodium uptake, a major factor in hypertension. "Slow, deep breathing does relax and dilate blood vessels temporarily, but that's not enough to explain a lasting drop in blood pressure," says Dr. David Anderson, a major slow breathing researcher with the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Anderson believes that what he calls "inhibitory breathing" knocks the blood’s chemical balance off kilter, making it more acidic. This makes the kidneys less efficient at pumping out sodium and in turn raises blood pressure. If slow breathing does in fact relieve high blood pressure by affecting sodium levels it amounts to a powerful diuretic without side effects!

A powerful combination!

But don’t yet underestimate the power of relaxation. Ironically, the clinical trials also show that relaxation is a vital ingredient in the slow breathing formula: the more relaxed you are, the greater the benefits! Conversely, without relaxation the method simply doesn’t work.

That’s why slow breathing with music is proving so effective. Genuine music of the right type provides the essential relaxation and has therapeutic value in its own right. And one further contribution of music is the enjoyment that ensures regular use (because no program will work from the back of a drawer, which is precisely where most "relaxation tapes" end up!).

Neither relaxation nor slow breathing nor music on their own are very effective at producing lasting reductions in high blood pressure. But slow breathing with music – plus relaxation – is a powerful combination indeed.

12 Ways To Make Every Day A Spa Day

By Marilee Tolen

Ahh....the Spa-ahhh. . .How wonderful it feels when you are in that tranquil, scented environment. The senses are stimulated from head to toe through touch, smell, surroundings, and taste. Even your soul feels pampered from the pride and pleasure of self-care. Spas know that natural pleasures are a popular favorite among spa-goers. Spas work really hard to help re-create nature for you. Don’t lose sight that you too have the ability to access the same natural forces and incorporate them into your daily life. It is possible for you to Make Every Day A Spa Day!

Do you want great skin?

Here are 12 ways to do that:

--Let the birds wake you up

There is nothing more jarring, to the body and mind at rest than the piercing shrill of an alarm clock to wake it out of its restorative sleep. The penetrating sound of a noisy alarm can start the day off on a stressful note. It can create the natural release of adrenaline, which increases the heart rate, which then creates a cascade of symptoms already leading you to stress, and you haven’t even gotten out of bed yet! There are options to these noisy alarms such as mechanical re-creations of nature sounds, but why not have the real thing? Open your window and tune yourself into the soft hum of natural bird sounds in between 5 to 6am. The sounds and vibrations of the birds at this hour are positive subliminal frequencies that can balance your energy system.

--Take a morning walk

It is said that the morning dew holds a special frequency that can revitalize your energy field, especially if you walk on the dew-ridden grass. The other benefits of the morning walk are that it can lower your stress level before you even get started for the day. It also gives you a chance to organize your thoughts, plan and visualize your day.

--Put music on with the coffee (or herbal tea)

Set the mood you want to create for the day by choosing music to play in the morning as you get ready for your day. Play party music if you want a fun day, soothing music if you want a peaceful day, or classical music if you need to do a lot of thinking in the day.

--Stretch in the shower

Hot water in your morning shower can loosen up muscles so it is easier to get a good stretch. Muscles that are stretching are using more oxygen and create more circulation just by the simple fact they are in motion.

--Eat a balanced breakfast

Eating right in the morning is another way to set the tone for the day. Your endocrine system (the part of the body that helps to handle stress) gets the right message and fuel to deal with the stress that it will have to handle. Protein and complex carbs are the way to go in the morning!

--Journal and Set Goals

Recording thoughts, intentions, and results is a good thing to do at the beginning and end of your day. With your morning coffee and your calendar in front of you, create your "to do" list for your chores, your self care, and even include the positive thoughts you want to think!

--Plan a 30-minute exercise slot for your day

Whether it’s at lunchtime or during the evening winding down hours, getting your body moving for at least 30 minutes at some point in the day is critical for your lymphatic system. The lymphatic system needs movement to do its job of detoxifying the body. Along with delivering more oxygen and increasing cardiovascular circulation, mobilizing lymph by movement is one of the best daily treatments.

--Clear desktop clutter

Clearing clutter from your workspace and environment can help clear the clutter of the mind. It can enable you to become more creative and productive. Take 3 to 5 minutes to clear your work environment of clutter.

--Breathe and be happy in the process of your day

Remember it’s the journey, not the destination. If the end of your workday is the goal of your day, you may wan t to re-frame how you view your day. If that doesn’t work then get another job where you will not be so attached to finishing the day.

--Enjoy family and friends in the evening, and put the tube aside

Sharing community projects or just joining together for the purpose of being together is a healthy way to solidify your day. Spending quality time with loved ones is a good way to reinforce your reason for being. Whether it’s about you being important to someone or someone being important to you, sharing time together from the heart and hearth is balancing for the soul.

--Take a Home Spa bath

There is no better way to end the day then to soak in your private tub filled with bubbles, salts, or special oils. Immersing your body in water (a shower can be just as effective!) can help to clear the events of the day from your aura and relax the body. This naturally relaxes the mind and it’s a great segue to a sound restorative sleep.

--Use essential oils to help your day and night

Essential oils can allow you to take the spa experience into every moment of your daily and nightly routine. Not only do they create an aromatic environment, but the actions of therapeutic grade essential oils (to be differentiated from perfume oils), can address little troubles that come up in every day life such as: headaches, stomach trouble, sinus issues, difficulty sleeping, and even emotional fluctuations! A daily arsenal to have on hand would be peppermint, lavender, lemon, Peace &Calming, and PanAway (the last two are trademarked blends from Young Living Essential Oil Company). Dowse your body, your carpet, your workspace, and your friends (or adversaries!) with essential oils to make your days and nights go smoother.

Road To Recovery

Recovering from an injury, illness or operation begins with rehabilitation. It’s a process that can be both physically and emotionally challenging. That’s why choosing the best facility is so important.

The patient or family member making the decisions need to work close with the referring physician, who can provide vital information to better understand the rehabilitation process, evaluate the options and help make an informed decision on the available choices.

Successful rehabilitation combines the efforts of physical, occupational and speech therapies with rehabilitative nursing, social services and sound medical direction.

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is designed to meet the needs of those patients who have lost functional independence as a result of injury or illness.

This therapy helps patients regain strength and balance, mobility and walking skills, and to recover from painful injuries.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy provides therapeutic activities that are intended to help residents achieve the highest level of independence in daily life. It teaches self-care skills, including eating, dressing, grooming, as well as mobility from bed to wheelchair or toileting and bathing.

This type of therapy also aids in easing emotional and social adjustment. Speech Therapy This is geared specifically for people with speech, language, swallowing or hearing disorders. This therapy teaches patients to speak more clearly, swallow without difficulty and use hearing aids effectively.

“Every rehabilitative facility is unique,” states James Elton administrator for Manor Care Health Services, South Ogden Utah. “Getting the combination of therapies, nursing and social services, and medical support that best suits the needs of you or a loved one can often be a challenge. Work close with your or your loved one’s discharge planner and primary physician to talk about the condition and rehabilitative needs as well as transitional rehabilitative support from hospital to home.”

Every individual is unique. So, too, is the type of care required. Understanding your loved one’s physical and mental well-being is necessary in determining the type of care that is best for him or her. Transitioning from a hospital back home can be difficult without the proper rehabilitation services.

Sauna And Wellness Culture: 10 Tips To Enjoying Your Sauna Experience

By Paul Symonds

You can improve the quality of your sauna experience by following some simple rules and ideas. Sauna is great for your skin, for your mind and general well-being. Below are some rules for making the sauna visit even more fun.

Go to Pool Click

1. If you or a friend owns the sauna you are using, then consider using some kind of fragrance in the sauna. Using aromatherapy oil such as eucalyptus, alpine, citrus, lavender or peppermint, can create a wonderful feeling and experience in the sauna. The benefits of using these oils vary, with oil such as eucalyptus able to give the sauna a clean and very fresh aroma, whilst lavender oil is very good for people looking to unwind and lose the tension they have.

2. Shed the swimming costume. It is peculiar that people in some countries wear swimming costumes into a sauna. It is unhygienic and also less beneficial comfortable wearing clothes in the sauna. For any sauna connoisseurs who have visited saunas in Germany, Holland, Sweden or Finland for example, you will appreciate that costumes are strictly forbidden. If the sauna you use is clothing only then you probably should wear something to avoid getting in trouble: If you are using a home sauna then no problem.

3. If you can, roll around in the snow in between sauna sessions - if your sauna is near snow. The sensation of cold after the heat of a sauna, is very refreshing. Alternatively, you can use a dip-pool with nice ice-cold water.

4. Make it a social event. Having lived in Finland for 6 months, I learned to appreciate sauna as a great social lifestyle. Finns join friends in the sauna and sometimes also organise trips to the countryside near lakes, to have sauna weekends. The Finnish saunas do tend to be male only or female only, although friends or families tend to go to the sauna together.

5. If you have any health condition including heart problems make sure you consult a doctor first. Your sauna experience will not be much fun if you have a heart condition.

6. Do not drink alcohol in the sauna. You may laugh but people do it sometimes and then they end up very de-hydrated. Becoming dehydrated can be detrimental to your health and thus not a good idea. You can always have a few beers afterwards.

7. Do not eat any heavy food before going into the sauna. If you have to then eat something light.

8. Ensure that you shower properly after the sauna. This will ensure that the pores of your skin are cleansed properly, and this in effect leaves you with much healthier skin.

9. Keep hydrated. Apart from not drinking beer in the sauna, as already discussed, try to drink plenty of water before and after the sauna.

10. Leave the metal jewellery in the locker rooms. You do not want the heat to damage your jewellery and thus ruin your overall enjoyment and you also do not want to be burnt by heated metal. It happens. Don't let it happen to you and enjoy your sauna experience.

Here Comes the Bride Showered with Fun

By Gail Leino

A Bridal Shower is a fun event! Traditionally this is a party for the girls to outfit the bride-to-be’s kitchen. A Bridal Shower can have a theme, such as a Tea Party, a Garden Party or a day at the spa. Brides might already have a fully equipped kitchen, so your party depends upon your bride!

Free Shipping Free Samples at Spalook

A traditional bridal shower includes a luncheon of some sort. Have each guest bring a salad or finger food entrée to share. An afternoon shower serving desserts is also a fun way to celebrate the Bride’s day. As a bonus to the bride, have each person bring a recipe card with the dish they share to build the bride (or future groom’s) cookbook. Another way to build the cookbook is to have each guest add a favorite recipe, no matter if they bring it or not, in the card.

Groceries are expensive and building up a pantry is a daunting task. To help stock a kitchen, have guests buy ingredients that go with the recipe they are giving. To take this a step farther, skip the wrapping paper and bow, and buy non-perishable foods instead! There is a poem to attach to the invitation that reads:

Save the paper, save the bow,
Buy a box or can of food
And watch (name)’s pantry grow!

Without wrapping paper, guests can get creative with gift displays, such as wrapping the gift in a plastic, reusable tablecloth or cloth napkins. Some people simply use the store bag the gift was bought in. The possibilities are endless.

Cups, plates, napkins and silverware can be purchased at the party supply store to match your chosen theme. If decorations are needed, balloons, streamers and wall hangings are made to coordinate. A party planning specialist will be happy to assist you with any need you may have.

Mrs. Party Gail Leino is the internet's leading authority on selecting the best possible "Party Supplies" party supplies, using proper etiquette and manners while also teaching organizational skills and fun facts. Here is a fun resource for "Bridal Shower Party Favors" Bridal Shower Party Favors free games, decorations and party ideas.

Your Home Spa in the Sky

By Marilee Tolen

There are many reasons why you should create a traveling mini-spa for yourself while you fly in the sky.

Here's a list of whys and hows:

--Clean The Air You Breathe

One of the things that has always bothered me about flying is the close proximity between people (for hours) and breathing the same re-circulated air. The worst thing is a coughing sneezing sick person. But even if we are seated farther away from a sick person, germs can spread easily in airplane cabins. Also, since the airlines humidify the cabin air, the moisture creates a breeding ground for microbes [although plane air is notoriously dry, thus mucous membranes get dry and are more vulnerable to attack by microorganisms].

15% Off The Best Skin Care Brands 468x60

Without fail, every time I get on a plane I say: "I am so thankful for my oils!"

Here's a recommended routine for keeping the air you breathe as free from pathogenic organisms (the bad bugs) as possible:

Keep your favorite respiratory, cleansing oils on your person, either in your pocket or purse. Take a hankie or tissue and sprinkle your oils on it. Tuck it into your shirt pocket, slipped up your sleeve, or under your watchband so it is easily accessible to lift up to your nose and inhale.

I do this about every 10 minutes during my flight. I take a few inhalations through the tissue so I can line my respiratory passages with these great oils that will keep the bad bugs away.

My favorite oils to do this with are (YL Blends) RC, Raven, Thieves, Peppermint, Purification, or any of the eucalyptus oils.

You can also create a little spray bottle or use Thieves Spray and spray your seat area. You may get a bit more attention doing it that way, so if you don't want to draw attention to yourself just use your hankie!

--Keep Your Ankles from Swelling

There's something about our bodies being a zillion miles up in the sky, in a pressurized cabin, sitting for sometimes several hours, that just makes our legs and feet want to swell. It might not have anything to do with how much salt we just ate, or if we drank too much water, or not enough. Whatever it is, swollen legs and feet are uncomfortable, unsightly, and hinder movement.

One of the best essential oils that assists both the blood circulation and the lymphatic circulation is cypress. You might want to rub some cypress on the bottom of your feet or on your ankles before you get on the plane, or at least when you get dressed on the morning of your flight. Use it after you land to help mobilize any stagnant fluid.

The ideal essential oil for this in my opinion is the Young Living Blend called Aroma-Life. It has cypress in it along with a few other single oils that have great properties. The synergy of this blend is great. I have seen great results on people who have used this oil blend for swollen feet.

-- Keep Your Immune System Strong

When we use therapeutic essential oils on our body, they simultaneously oxygenate and cleanse each cell in the body This combination of actions help to keep the immune system strong.

--Diminish Stress and Relax

Even if you are excited about your destination, there is still stress associated with travel. It's good stress, but its stress.

Here's what you can do to diminish stress:

--Use Lavender oil on the bottom of your feet and pulse points (my favorite lavender is Young Living's special lavender from St.Marie's - it is exquisite although a bit more expensive than their regular lavender). Another essential oil blend that is often recommended for stress is Peace and Calming. Dowse yourself throughout the flight with either of these oils. It will help people around you as well.

--Take your headset with you, or rent one from the airlines, and listen to classical or relaxation music that they offer.

--Close your eyes and do some deep breathing, and picture a peaceful scene, the face of a loved one or beloved pet, or your wonderful vacation in your mind! Imagery is a powerful enhancement to health.

--Feel Good When You Land

That's ultimately what we want, isn't it? We don't want to get so stressed out getting ready for the trip and traveling to the point where we are exhausted and sick when we get there!

The degree to which you are able to stay centered and in that spa-like frame of mind while you are traveling, is the degree to which you will feel great when you arrive at your destination.

One of the most important and effective ways of feeling good while you travel is to Drink Plenty of Water!

--Prevent Jet Lag

This is the bottom line. Nobody wants to feel tired and sick from flying and traveling. According to Charles F. Ehert, Ph.D. (senior scientist at US Deptof Energy Argonne National Laboratory in Argonne, Illinois, author of "Overcoming Jet Lag") it takes one day to recover for each time zone you go through. Therefore, coast-to-coast recovery time is 3 days because you cross 3 different time zones.

This also means that going from New York to Japan - which is 15time zones, would necessitate more than one week for recovery.

We can do things to prevent Jet Lag. Here are some of Dr. Ehert's suggestions from his book:

Plan your flight so that you arrive at night
Get plenty of sleep before your trip
Avoid alcohol and anything that dehydrates the body
Exercise on the plane (contract and relax muscles, and stretch)
Sit in sun on plane if you can
Exercise when you get to your hotel
Get out in the sunshine when you arrive at your destination
Get immediately into the sync of new the time zone. Don't try to catch up on sleep

Here is Ehert's Anti-Jet Lag diet:

--3 days before travel eat a feast - high protein breakfast and lunch and high carb dinner
--2 days before eat lightly - fruits, soups, broth
--1 day before eat a feast again (same as above)
--On the day of travel eat very light, next to nothing, and eat regularly when you arrive at that time zone's meal times

Natural Aromatherapy, Essence of Health

By Nur Syahid

Bringing Home Nature’s Forest Correctly and Safely

Preserving Both Essence and Health

Recently, aromatherapy has become a hot topic for discussions. Discussions do not focus on the essential oil, but rather its container; and not its plant origin, but rather the isopropyl alcohol that caused a stir. Eventually, discussions digressed into various associated issues and even resulted in specious propaganda of exaggerated information that included relaying of erroneous messages, influencing people against aromatherapy.

In actual fact, aromatherapy has existed for years in western culture and in Europe, there are hundreds of years of history in aromatherapy culture. Eight years since its first importation into Taiwan, how much do Taiwanese consumers know about aromatherapy? From the mystery surrounding a product when it is first introduced, to its gradual acceptance through the course of development, and in the end to becoming an ordinary everyday product, how much do related knowledge and application methods expand as products become more popular? Both the industry, as well as many consumers, believe that essential oils have curative effects, so what is the principle at issue? Or are we to regard essential oils merely as some kind of aromatic ornament? Judging from its long history, and by taking a holistic view of aromatherapy, integrating the three perspectives of the researcher, the professional and the industry, we find that aromatherapy is above reproach!

Ancient Royalties Prescribed it for Effective Stress Relief

The term “aromatherapy" is a combination of two English words “aroma” (meaning fragrance) and “therapy” (meaning treatment). Originating from ancient Egypt, as well as other ancient civilisations, it became fashionable in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. It became a fad in the western world, with essential oils being used to relieve mental stress and to stimulate bodily health. This usage has remained ever since.

What is essential oil? Essential oil is a kind of volatile and highly concentrated aromatic compound, produced using methods to extract essences from the plant’s root, stem, leaf, seed or flower. There is a classification of elementary or compound essential oils. Most elementary essential oil has its anti-bacterial function, to comfort and to soothe. Compound essential oil is a complementary mix of two or more of the above, matched for application in order to multiply their effectiveness.

Aromatherapy usage may be divided into those for massage, bathing, inhalation, vapor inhalation, atomisation, skin maintenance, hair protection, and so on. The principle of aromatherapy lies in the vaporisation of essential oil, which can be inhaled so as to stimulate our sense of smell, which in turn stimulates our brain regions, inducing desired moods and responses. Moreover, since the essential oil molecule is extremely small, it can also penetrate through the surface of the skin, thereby passing through the lymphatic cells to other parts of the body. The aromatic vapors in contact with the skin, can stimulate nerves at the surface of the skin, and produce responses transmitted to the brain, through a series of chemical responses, to induce the desired results or moods in the body.

Aromatherapy – Busy People’s DIY Forest Bath Experience

Many working people share the same woes like frequent headaches caused by intense work burdens, suffering from attacks of pain, often elusive, yet extremely troubling. Visits to doctors only mean getting some routine prescriptions, and a doctor’s advice that you work too hard, so rest well, go take a stroll in the suburbs to soothe both body and mind, and so on. Yet when work piles up, do you find that the headaches seem incurable? However, have you experienced the whiff of a sea breeze, or being submerged in a forest, waterfall region, etc and felt really comfortabe?

The reason that essential oil is able to help alleviate illnesses, or enable clarity of mind to allow attention to be focused, or soothe emotions, eliminate anxiety and aid in sleep, is because it is extracted from nature – the plant's root, stem, leaf, seed or flower. Different essential oils can produce different effects and bodily responses in people; this is because when a person’s body and mind is in joyful repose, all physical ills will be reduced naturally. The "mobile forest bath" usage of aromatherapy works by releasing the effective essences that have been extracted from nature into your environment.

Bel’Air’s Global Chairman Mr. Huang Shu Li explained further that arduous work and stress have resulted in all sorts of sicknesses in our modern generation. They can be solved using natural means, the best method and without any side effects. Bel’Air’s plant essential oils are extracted from natural plants and flowers, and Mr. Huang has devoted much effect to developing techniques of natural plant essential oil extractions, and he continues to engage experienced professionals and researchers to conduct more scientific tests, and through the use of actual test data, to convince consumers and the public to have knowledge and understanding of the real effectiveness of essential oils, and to foster a deeper appreciation of the true benefits of essential oils.

Visiting Professor of Tokyo University Biological Technology Department and Professor of National Yang Ming University Biochemistry Department, Professor Tsai Ying Chieh, has been conducting amny experiments, at the company’s request, on how Bel’Air’s essential oil vapors affect bacteria in the air. Professor Tsai also focused on analysis of the chemical compositions of Bel’Air’s plant essential oils, and also examined their safety for applications, and the active anti-oxidisation properties (using Ames Test). Ames Test is the most standard method used to detect whether a compound or medicine can undergo sudden transformation in its chemical composition. Professor Tsai first experimented on five kinds of essential oils, namely ginseng, green tea, lotus, green bamboo and eucalyptus, to test their chemical compositions before and after sustaining high temperature at 200-300 Degree Celsius. Results show that these five kinds of essential oils do not exhibit obvious changes in their compositions.

Therefore, Bel’Air’s plant essentials oils with their natural extracted ingredients, when used in aromatherapy in your home, can work to render effects like being situated in the midst of a natural forest, giving effective air purification.

Psychological Influence Or Curative Effect?

Do essential oils really have curative effects? Government’s stance may differ with that of the aromatic health industry, mainly due to the different viewpoints. From the rigorous perspective of the health bureau charged with enforcing medicinal regulation, institutionalised clinical tests are necessary before recognition of claims, but from the angle of the health promoter, the process towards full recognition is not unlike the phenomenon with the development of Chinese medicine, which gradually developed from the traditional treatments to the mainstream scientific arena, such is also the case for the development of aromatherapy.

Therefore, though not widely recognised for the curative effects, in some countries, aromatherapy have nevertheless come under the category for medical treatments; taking France as an example, non-certified aromatherapists (known as Naturopathes) cannot use essential oil in the name of treatment (especially for oral application), however, certified doctors of aromatherapy (known as Naturoth erapeutes) can prescribe both oral and external uses of aromatherapy treatments. Therefore, curative effects of essential oil are not merely acknowledged in Europe and America, but there are also extremely rigorous management and regulations involved. These systems are however not yet established in Asian culture, and hence the differing veiwpoints between industry and government in this part of the world.

Isopropyl alcohol is common in our everyday life. Emphasis should not be to completely annihilate or simply reject its usage, but rather to understand its effects and methods of application. Public and government agencies need not regard isopropyl alcohol, which has been part of our everyday life, with undue suspicions.

Natural Deodorants You Never Heard Of

By Marilee Tolen

Why the interest in natural deodorants? Just like every other part of the body, the underarm area has a purpose. It allows the body to cleanse and detoxify itself along with helping to regulate the body's temperature. The sweat glands under the arm and the lymph nodes are part of the "excretory system" of the body which helps the body "excrete" the toxins.

Home Remedies For Better Health

Almost every antiperspirant on the market contains aluminum. Aluminum is a heavy metal and can stress the body. The body doesn't have a mechanism to easily rid itself of metals. Why burden part of the excretory system with a heavy metal when there are natural alternatives that are often less expensive?

Here are some:

--Baking soda Keep a box at your bathroom sink and sprinkle on your palm and apply it under your arm like a powder

--Corn Starch Keep a box at your bathroom sink and apply under your arm

--Vinegar Dilute white vinegar with water and splash under arm

--Essential Oils Lavender, melaleuca (tea-tree), rosemary, thyme. Use only therapeutic-grade. Splash a few drops under your arm.

--Combine baking soda, cornstarch, and your favorite essential oil in a container and use under your arm

--Natural Toothpaste Most natural toothpastes have baking soda, salts, and essential oils. (Don't use Tom's, it has propylene glycol). Put a dab on your finger and rub under your armpit. Just know the toothpastes with mint will be a bit more refreshing! The mint sensation will last just a few minutes.

It's best that you don't apply anything immediately after shaving. Commercially, a good alternative is crystal stone deodorants. It you are feeling industrious and want to make your own solid deodorant at home, here's a recipe:

1 1/2 tbs beeswax (yellow is best) 1/2 tbs cocoa butter1 tablespoon coconut oil15 drops thyme essential oil15 drops rosemary essential oil25 drops lavender essential oil3 drops castor oil Melt beeswax in a glass jar standing in hot water, add the cocoa butter, and when it has melted, add the oils. Stir to mix thoroughly, then pour into a clean, empty deodorant stick case and leave to cool and set.
