Environmental Therapies- Clinical Ecology
By
Robin BrainThe Belief that our environment can affect our health is not new. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek father of modern medicine (today's physicians still respect the Hippocratic Oath even if they no longer take it), recorded the beneficial and harmful effects of certain foods in the 5th century B.C.

Today our bodies face a daily assault undreamed of by the ancient Greeks: our crops are sprayed with pesticides, our food is packed with preservatives, and the air we breathe is often full of gasoline fumes and pollution.
The overall effect on our bodies is a weakened immune system that makes us even more susceptible to allergies and sensitivities. Air pollution is one of the worst problems, caused by industries, agriculture, power stations, aerosols and other chemicals, coal and other fires. As a result we suffer from headaches, respiratory tract infections and ailments, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, eye problems, and eventually a profound breakdown in health manifested by various cancers. Other environmental hazards include lead from gasoline which causes hyperactivity birth defects - acid rain, carbon monoxide poisoning, water pollution, and radiation.
Clinical ecologists treat illnesses and disorders that they believe stem from an individual's reaction to these environmental factors. They practice what is known as environmental medicine, and they estimate that between 10 and 30 percent of the population suffer from some form of ecological illness.
Clinical ecologists believe that foods are still the most common environmental factors causing illness. They identify the particular foods or chemicals to which an individual is sensitive and advise on treatment. The simplest treatment is to avoidu the foods and chemicals that cause problems. Howeer, people are often sensitive to several different substances. If these are foods, removing them all the diet could lead to nutritional problems; if these sensitivity is to a very common environmental pollutant,or to a chemical with which an individual works. it may be practically impossible to avoid. In this case tretment concentrates on desensitizing the individual.
Desensitization involves diluting the troublesome foods or chemicals and placing drops of the solution under the tongue. Solutions of varying strengths are used until a tolerance level is established. Then it will usually be possible to withstand limited exposure to the harmful food or chemicals.

Balneotherapy - Definition and Characteristics
The term "balneotherapy" has gradually come to be applied to everything relating to spa treatment, including the drinking of waters and the use of hot baths and natural vapor baths, as well as of the various kinds of mud and sand used for hot applications. The principal constituents found in mineral waters are sodium, magnesium, calcium and iron, in combination with the acids to form chlorides, sulphates, sulphides and carbonates. Other substances occasionally present in sufficient quantity to exert a therapeutic influence are arsenic, lithium, potassium, manganese, bromine, iodine, &c. The chief gases in solution are oxygen, nitrogen, carbonic acid and hydrogen sulfide. Argon and helium occur in some of the "simple thermal" and "thermal sulfur waters." There are few doctors who would deny the great value of special bathing and drinking cures in certain morbid conditions. In the employment of the various mineral waters, many of the spas adopt special means by which they increase or modify their influence, e.g. the so-called "aromatic" or "medicated" baths, in which substances are mixed to exert a special influence on the skin and peripheral nerves. Of these the "pine needle" bath has the greatest repute; it is made by adding a decoction of the needles or young shoots of firs and pines. Fir wood oil (a mixture of ethereal oils) or the tincture of an alcoholic extract acts equally well. The volatile ethereal constituents are sup-posed to penetrate the skin and to stimulate the cutaneous circulation and peripheral nerves, being eliminated later by the ordinary channels.

Similar effects follow the addition to the bath of aromatic herbs, such as chamomile, thyme, &c. For a full-sized bath 1.5 to 2 lb of herbs are tied in a muslin bag and infused in a gallon of boiling water; the juices are then expressed and the infusion added to the bath. Astringent baths are prepared in a similar way from decoctions of oak bark, walnut leaves, &c. In many spas on the European continent baths are prepared from peat or mud mixed with hot mineral water. Mineral peat consists of decomposing vegetable soil that has been so long in the neighborhood of the medicinal spring that it has undergone peculiar and variable chemical changes. This is mixed with the hot mineral water until the bath has the desired consistency, the effect on the patient being in almost direct proportion to the density. These baths vary greatly in composition. Mud baths are chiefly prepared from muddy deposits found in the neighborhood of the springs, as at St Amand. They act like a large poultice applied to the surface of the body, and in addition to the influence of the temperature, they exert a considerable mechanical effect. The pulse is accelerated some 6 to 12 beats a minute, the respiration number rises, and the patient is thrown into a profuse perspiration. They have very great value in gouty and rheumatic conditions and in some of the special troubles of women. There are certain conditions in which mineral water treatment is distinctly contra-indicated.Labels: aromatic herbs

Spiritual Healing at a Spa
By Melissa Steele
While some spas focus on physical and mental health, there are other spas that focus on spiritual health. Spiritual spas encourage their visitors to pursue a spiritual journey of introspection and reflection by participating in the activities that are available during their spa visit. The types of activities available depend on the type of spiritual spa you visit.

Most spas focus on Asian techniques for meditation and relaxation. At these spas, you can involve yourself in relaxing and introspective techniques such as meditation, tai chi, chi gong, yoga, etc. Instructors guide you through these techniques that lead to serenity, understanding, and acceptance. They also teach you to carry these activities into your daily life.
Many also use physical methods of raising your spiritual consciousness. For example, some spiritual spas employ shamans who perform techniques that are meant to erase the things from your past that hinder your present life. Some services are meant to balance and cleanse the body of the imprints that predispose us to negative physical and emotional conditions. Others are said to uncover the source of past wounding or trauma and retrieve lost energy. Finally, some techniques are meant to incorporate the energy of who you want to become and reveal obstacles and opportunities along the path.
Other types of spiritual spas focus more on Western religious beliefs. These spas focus their services on encouraging their visitors to connect with and grow closer to the Christian God. They encourage people to pursue whole life health, clear purpose, and an authentic connection with God. The activities available at these types of spiritual spas are similar to Eastern methods of relaxation and meditation. They generally encourage painting, hiking, and prayer as method of introspection and reflection.
Spiritual spas that focus on Western religious beliefs generally offer services on all aspects of a person's life. Many of their activities involve reading the Bible as a means of finding answers in life. The activity moderators can help people to find answers in the Bible for their specific life struggles, such as problems in marriage, friendship, parenting, employment, or grief. Others use the Bible as a source of promoting feelings of hope, love, kindness, courage, wisdom, and trust in their daily lives.
Before visiting a spiritual spa, be sure to determine what spiritual activities the spa focuses on. Persons interested in visiting a spa where they can learn Eastern methods of relaxation are not going to be satisfied with reading the Bible for a week. Spiritual healing at a spa required full devotion to the spas programs.

Balneotherapy
Balneotherapy the treatment of disease by bathing. It may involve hot or cold water, massage via moving water, relaxation or stimulation. Many mineral waters at spas are rich in particular minerals (silica, sulfur, selenium, radium) which can be absorbed via the skin.

There are several ways Balneotherapy works. Bathing in hot springs progressively increases the body temperature, helping us to fight off bacteria and viruses. Hot spring bathing boosts hydrostatic pressure within the body, therefore heightening blood circulation and body cell oxygenation. The enhanced blood flow helps to eliminate toxins by increasing the flow of oxygen to the blood and so it can carry nutrients to vital tissues and organs. Bathing in hot springs increases the body's metabolism, and aids digestion.Labels: Bathing, hot springs

All About Aromatherapy
By Melissa Steele
The term aromatherapy was first used in the 1920s by French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé. Gattefossé first discovered the potential healing powers of natural oils after catching his arm on fire one day in his lab. In his attempt to put out the fire, he thrust his arm into the nearest bin of liquid, which just happened to be lavender oil. The burn healed quickly without a scar.

Aromatherapy is commonly associated with alternative healing techniques. It is the process of using natural oils as a means to alter a person's mood or health. There are three main branches of aromatherapy. The first is home aromatherapy, which is self-treatment with aromatherapy products. The second is clinical aromatherapy. Clinical aromatherapy is used as a pharmacological treatment in a clinical setting. The third branch is aromachology. Aromachology is the study of odors and their effects on the mind.
There are three common methods of aromatherapy use. The first is the use of oil as a scent. Commonly, aromatherapy oils used for this purpose are found in candle form. At the scent level, certain plant oils activate the limbic system and the emotional centers of the brain. Aromatherapy candles are believed to be beneficial in creating alternate emotions.
The second common method of aromatherapy use is as a topical treatment. When certain plant oils are applied to the skin, they activate thermal receptors and kill microbes and fungi. In many cases, natural oils are used to heal skin abrasions, just as Gattefossé used lavender oil to expedite the healing of his burn wounds.
The final common method of aromatherapy use is as an internal drug. For this purpose, natural oil medications must be prescribed. They are said to activate the immune system.
Aromatherapy, especially in the more developed countries of the world, is almost never used as the sole treatment for an ailment. Often, it is only used as a method of alternative medicine. However, many healthcare workers use aromatherapy techniques in combination with other more recognized treatments.
However, many individuals preach of the stress-relieving benefits of aromatherapy scents. In fact, aromatherapy is commonly used in spas as a method of relaxation. Skeptics argue that the benefits of aromatherapy treatments are supported with little scientific research.
Persons interested in using aromatherapy techniques as a means of stress reduction need to first understand what natural oils are effective in providing the emotional effect they desire. For example, honeysuckle oils are said to be relaxing and rejuvenating, perfect for stress reduction after a long week at work. Likewise, rose oils are said to create a romantic atmosphere.

Chromo Therapy in the Infrared Sauna
By Erik Peeters
Color has a tremendous impact on our lives, we wear colors to signify meanings, such as black for a funeral, white for a wedding. Red has been a color to represent loose women, like the scarlet letter, purple the color of royalty. Our health is based upon balancing our physical needs, our emotional needs, spiritual and mental needs, and these can benefit by the use of chromo therapy used in infrared saunas.

Infrared saunas can now be equipped with these incredible Color Therapy Lights. There is a reading light that has yellow, orange and red spectrums which help to sooth your mind as well as your body. Color therapy has also been associated with natural treatments using 7 different colors. These color therapies have been known to benefit emotions, mental and spiritual health.
Chromo therapy, is a form of alternative medicine. There are therapists that are trained in chromotherapy, using light to balance energy where there is a lack whether it is a physical, spiritual, emotional or mental. In the early 1900's, Dr. Max Luscher developed a standard method of diagnosis using the Luscher's color test. When applying color and light therapy to specific areas of the body, the colors will become associated with a positive and negative effect.
Our health is based on balance in our bodies, not just our physical needs, the mental and spiritual needs too. There is a group known as Ayurvedic healers that associate the colors of the main chakras in the body. There are 7 chakras in each area. The chakras spiritual center in the body is located down along the spine. Information and energy are stored in the Chakras, and much of this information come from India with their yogic teachings. These teachings associate each chakra with one of the four elements, earth, fire, air, and water. There are 7 chakras and each one is associated with an organ or system in our bodies. Every chakra has a dominant color, but these colors can become imbalanced. This can happen and cause disease or other health ramifications. With the introduction of appropriate colors, these imbalances can be fixed. There are three dominant chakras, their corresponding location, their colors along with emotional and physical association.
The first chakra is RED, this is located at the base of the spine. Red is the earth element. This affect our legs and feet therefore affecting the way we walk and our elimination cycle. The positive qualities are courage, loyalty, perseverance and steadfastness. Someone with too much Red energy can be very stubborn, controlling and very dominant. With chromo therapy , this color is considered to be the color of life, that of the sun and fire. It is said to raise blood pressure and increasing the breathing and pulse rate. Red color therapy is used to provide support to the circulatory functional and has been claimed to benefit anemia, asthma, chronic coughing and a few skin diseases. In a person with too much red, there can be domination issues, and anger.
The second chakra is Orange, this is the pelvis area. This color is used to help with mental illness, depression, and mood disorders, it is believed to affect our moods making us more alert and cheerful. Orange could be used in association in treatments of anemia, anorexia, the digestive system. If a person has too much orange, they can show it in tiredness, confusion or pessimism.
The third chakra is Yellow, which is the solar plexus above the navel. This is the symbol of the sun and the most commonly used color in light therapy. Yellow is able to reflect light in all directions, therefore creating a impression of detachment. Yellow is applied to glandular diseases or anything associated with the lymphatic system to help balance out and strengthen the nervous system in our bodies when used in Homeopathy. They claim that yellow greatly affects the assistance to our metabolism and glandular activities. If there is too much yellow, there can be a lack of concentration.
It is apparent, that light therapy, though there aren't any medical claims, have shown beneficial effects on the body and mind. This along with the infrared heat therapy inside the infrared sauna, can provide a wonderful balance in how we feel, and deal with the stresses of life.
You can have an infrared sauna without light therapy features as well, if you are interested in dealing with stress and the other health benefits of the infrared sauna.

Aromatherapy Bath Oil - The Perfect Way To Unwind Yourself
By
Stefanie YoungWarm water has been used for relaxation for centuries, and combined with aromatherapy bath oil, it can really do wonders in healing your tired spirits after a rough day! Apart from the healing properties, they add that unique dimension of wonderful scents too, which have their own enigmatic effect on our senses. But there are certain unscented oils too, for those people who just prefer the moisturizing benefits of such a treatment.

Aromatic bath oil can be easily prepared at home, using essential oils and a carrier oil like jojoba, olive, sesame, coconut or even a pure Vitamin E based oil, which can be quite expensive though. But home-made oils work equally fine. Most commonly used aromatherapy bath oil ingredients are Ylang Ylang, Lemon, Lavender, Rose, Bergamot, Yarrow and Citrus. The base oils and essential oils are easily available from bath suppliers and even some grocery stores today.
Recipes for concocting your own bath oils are freely available too. So you can start mixing and matching aromas and oils to suit your various moods and needs and to cure various physical ailments. You just need to add 15-30 drops of the essential oil to one ounce of the basic oil or the carrier oil. Add the essential oil drop by drop, as the aromatherapy oils work best when experienced at a gradual flow.
Make sure you prepare the mixture in a glass, porcelain or an aluminum bottle, as plastic is reactive to the aroma oils. And stir well before use. Since this makes a highly concentrated recipe, you just need to add 1-2 teaspoons of this aromatherapy bath oil per bath, right before you step into it, so as to get maximum benefits of the vapors.
Not only does adding your favorite fragrance to your bath lend it a unique relaxing attribute for both body and mind, it can also provide some more serious health benefits. For example, PMS symptoms can be eased by adding a few drops of Geranium oil to your bath. This particular recipe also helps alleviate joint pains and arthritis. And using Myrrh oil, in an aromatherapy bath oil recipe, helps in relieving respiratory disorders and also aids in the digestive process by stimulating the digestive organs.
Even Rosemary oil helps in relieving the PMS symptoms. And men can use Ylang ylang or the pungent orange smell to their morning bath, in order to give a more invigorating start to their day. Women can use Bergamot mixed with Neroli, in the ratio 2:1, to give their energy levels a boost right at the beginning of the day. Mandarin and Lemon mixed together, give a revitalizing quality to your bath, at the end of a long, tiring day. Rose and Sandalwood or Lavender and Ylang ylang combinations act as sleep enhancers at the end of the day.
But using these essential oils blended with some carrier oil, as described above, is better than using the essential oils alone directly in your bath water, as the essential oils can stick to one spot on your skin and cause irritation. The healing attributes of these oils directly get absorbed in our respiratory, skin and nervous systems. Not only do they work wonders on joint problems and muscle pains, but regular use of aromatherapy bath oil softens and nourishes the skin by absorbing the oils into our skin.

By Melanie Vonzabuesnig
Essential oils are becoming a popular method to deal with childhood head lice. The pesticide treatments commonly used contain toxins that pose serious health threats. Because the scalp has many blood vessels close to the skin, these toxic substances are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Pesticide treatments which are commonly used to repel lice contain toxins that pose serious health threats. Because the scalp has many blood vessels close to the skin, these toxic substances are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
Harmful side effects from chemical lice treatments include nervous system damage, convulsions, seizures, nausea, vomiting, headaches, mental confusion and even death. To make matters worse, these pesticides are becoming less effective as lice are developing a resistance to them. This often leads to repeated treatments. The additional exposure adds to the potential harm.
Head lice are highly contagious and very common among children. Because certain essential oils are highly effective against lice, there is absolutely no reason to expose children to dangerous pesticide treatment.
Laboratory tests (Veal 1996) show the essential oils of aniseed, cinnamon leaf, red thyme, tea tree, peppermint, nutmeg and oregano to be effective in killing live lice and their eggs. Other essential oils used to repel lice include lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, juniper berry, bergamot, clary sage, and lemongrass.
Tea tree oil may be the best choice for several reasons. Tea tree oil was found to be 93% effective against killing adult lice and 83% effective in killing their eggs. It is generally safe and is one of the only essential oils that can be used neat (undiluted) on the skin (in small amounts.) Tea tree oil can be used on children as young as one year old. Tea tree oil is so versatile that it should be on hand in every household. Having it on hand for other uses will prevent having to search for ingredients when dealing with a lice infestation that requires prompt action.
Many of the essential oils listed above should not be used on children. It is important to check safety data before using any essential oil. Oregano oil and red thyme oil should not be used at all. All essential oils, including tea tree should only be used by children on an "as needed" basis, and must be properly diluted.
Essential oils can be used both to rid the scalp of lice when an infestation is present and as a preventative measure when there is a potential threat.
To rid the scalp of lice the essential oils must be diluted in a vegetable oil or alcohol. Vegetable oil may be the best choice for smothering lice and to soothe scalp that may be sore or itchy from infestation.
Olive oil or vodka is fine if you have it on hand. Sweet almond oil, jojoba or grape seed oil are other good choices.
4 TBS (2oz) vegetable oil (or vodka)1 tsp castor oil (optional)20 drops tea tree oil
Blend well. Have child sit on a chair in the bathtub. Apply mixture to scalp and hair. Use only the necessary amount to make sure entire scalp and hair is coated. Cover with plastic shower cap. Leave on for several hours. Then wash and condition hair. Comb hair thoroughly with nit comb. Then rinse hair with the following rinse.
FINAL RINSE 1-quart warm water¼ cup cider vinegar2-5 drops tea tree oilShake well to disperse essential oil. Pour over clean hair. Do not rinse out. When hair dries, saturate a nit comb with tea tree oil and re-comb.
LAUNDRY
Lice can remain alive for up to 72 hours after they have left the human host. Re-infestation can occur if lice remain on pillows, bed linen, combs, clothes and towels. Completely wash all clothing and bedding. One teaspoon of tea tree oil can be added to each wash load. A few drops can be added to a washcloth and placed in the dryer with clothes and bedding. Dry on hottest setting available.
SHAMPOO
During the weeks following lice infestation use the following shampoo formula. Add 2-4 drops of tea tree oil to your normal amount of shampoo for one use. Leave shampoo in for five minutes before rinsing out. Finish with final rinse. Comb with nit comb.
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES
To prevent lice from infesting your child's hair, especially if there is a potential threat, several precautions can be taken. The shampoo and rinse formula described above can be used for precautionary measures. Another quick method to deter potential lice infestation is to dab a few drops of tea tree oil on your fingertips and run your finger through child's hair.
Warn your child about head to head contact with other children. Advise them not to share hats, helmets, brushes and hair accessories. If they are in day care or elementary school get in a habit of checking their scalp for nits on a regular basis. Early detection will allow quicker relief with fewer side effects such as itching and scabbing.
Tea tree oil is known as a "first aid kit in a bottle". If you keep a bottle on hand for possible lice infections, you will soon discover it's many other uses and benefits.
